The five classical purification and rejuvenation therapies of Ayurveda, administered by a Kerala-trained specialist.
"Pancha" means five, and "Karma" means action or therapy. Panchkarma is the cornerstone of Ayurvedic healing β a systematic process of purification that removes accumulated toxins (Ama) from the body, restores doshic balance and rejuvenates every cell of the body and mind. At Arogya Kaya, Panchkarma is administered by Dr. Rimple Sethi, trained at Arya Vaidya Sala Kottakkal, Kerala.
Preparatory procedures β Snehana (oleation) and Swedana (sudation) to loosen and mobilise toxins.
Main therapies β the five classical procedures that eliminate toxins through various pathways of the body.
Post-treatment care β dietary protocols and rejuvenation therapies to consolidate healing results.
Abhyanga is a full-body warm medicated oil massage administered by skilled therapists. The medicated oils, selected based on your constitution and health condition, are worked into the skin and deeper tissues using rhythmic, flowing strokes that follow the direction of body hair and marma points.
The warmth of the oils opens pores, improves circulation, nourishes all seven tissue layers (Dhatus) and helps dislodge toxins accumulated in the tissues. It is deeply relaxing, rejuvenating and profoundly healing.
Shirodhara involves pouring a continuous, gentle stream of warm medicated oil from a suspended vessel onto the centre of the forehead (Ajna chakra point) in a slow, rhythmic, pendulum motion. The duration is typically 30β45 minutes.
This extraordinary therapy works directly on the nervous system, calming the mind and releasing deep-seated mental tension. It is one of Ayurveda's most powerful treatments for stress, anxiety, insomnia and neurological conditions.
Nasya is the administration of medicated oils, herbal juices or decoctions through the nasal passages. According to Ayurveda, the nose is the gateway to the head (Murdha), and Nasya is the primary treatment for all conditions related to structures above the shoulders.
Before Nasya, a gentle facial steam and Abhyanga prepares the tissues. The medicated substance is then instilled into each nostril, penetrating deep into the cranial cavities to cleanse accumulated Kapha and toxins.
Virechana is a medicated purgation therapy that eliminates excess Pitta dosha and toxins accumulated in the liver, gallbladder, small intestine and blood. It is administered after thorough preparation with Snehapana (internal oleation with medicated ghee) and Swedana.
A carefully selected herbal purgative is administered on the day of treatment. The process systematically cleanses the Pitta pathways, resulting in improved liver function, clear skin, balanced hormones and sharp mental function.
Basti is considered the most important and effective of all Panchkarma therapies. Medicated oils (Anuvasana Basti) or herbal decoctions (Niruha Basti) are administered via the rectal route to cleanse the colon, nourish Vata dosha and remove deep-seated toxins from the body.
Vata governs movement in the body, and the colon is its primary seat. By treating the colon through Basti, we can address imbalances throughout the entire body. It is extraordinarily effective for nervous system disorders, joint disease and chronic degenerative conditions.
Swedana is a steam therapy using a wooden steam chamber or localised steam applications infused with medicinal herbs. Following Abhyanga, Swedana opens the channels (srotas) of the body, dilates pores, increases peripheral circulation and helps liquify the toxins loosened by oil massage.
There are multiple forms of Swedana including Bashpa Swedana (herbal steam), Nadi Swedana (localised steam pipe) and Pinda Sweda (heated herbal bolus massage). Each is chosen based on the patient's condition and treatment goals.
